In case you didn't know it's World Thrift Day tomorrow...exciting I know! But in all seriousness I love rifling through antiques shops and exploring the shelves of second hand shops or scrolling through pages and pages of Ebay or Gumtree trying to spot an exciting item. And I've found some fabulous pieces in the process!
I would love for this post to inspire you all to do some exploring in your local thrift stores because I think you'll be surprised with what you can find! Now it doesn't happen every time, there are some times I have looked in 15 shops and found nothing but that makes finding something you fall in love with all the more special. So here are my three tips to help you smash World Thrift Day and find some gems to add to your collections.
Be Open Minded
First and foremost, be open minded. This is my number one tip for thrift shop shopping. It's fine for you to go in looking with something specific in mind, in fact thats great but don't let it blind you from the other fab pieces you might come across. Sometimes to best pieces are the ones you stumble upon. I found a lovely little marble pestle and mortar, really similar to the image below, for £2.50 whilst trying to find bookends. Yes it was a small find but a great find non the less!
Sometimes you will need to rummage through the boxes and bins to discover your gem. If you follow my Instagram you probably saw this a little while ago but I found my stunning Onyx chess set underneath a table lamp, hidden behind a chair, so dig dig dig! Over turn every rock because your piece might be hiding in plain sight.
Now this isn't always possible but you might as well give it ago especially if your paying cash. In my experience most antiques shops are willing to talk price if you're interested in a piece and if they're willing, it's definitely worth it! I absolutely fell in love with this sideboard a few years ago (I still am very much in love with it) and I managed to barter the price down by £150 which made me love it even more! It's the best feeling when you can take something home for a fantastic price.
So there you have it, my three simple and easy tips to make the most of World Thrift Day. Not only will you find some fantastic new pieces for your home, you will be saving money and helping the environment because you are giving something a second life! So go and explore your local thrift shops or do some online rummaging and see what you can find...enjoy!!! Until next time...
